COLONIAL MAPS
Map of the divided nEW jERSEY
WHY: The religious dissenters were a problem for Carteret and Berkeley when they refused to abide by laws and taxation. Berkeley decided to sell his half of the colony to 2 Quakers. In 1676, John Fenwick and George Billing ruled their half of the colony, West Jersey. Carteret sold his after Berkeley to a group of 2 dozen propietors. The people who owned West Jersey and East Jersey were not that different after all. Each of their ambitious nature and enthusiasm helped each settlement thrive. However this didnt last long, only 30 years. In 1702 the crown united both Jerseys as a single colony.
